EDO 2024: It Is Possible To Stop Harassment, Intimidation Of Labour Party Members During Elections, says Osagie

By Ehichioya Steve Odion

One of the leading Governorship aspirants for the Edo 2024 Governorship election and security expert, Mr. Bassey Ogbemudia has described the intimidation of labour Party members during elections in the country by other political parties as a big challenge for the party that need to be tackled head on.

He made this observation recently in an interview with the Groove Watch News crew in Benin City while commenting on the harassment and intimidation of labour party members in all the elections held so far across the country.

"I have always believed that there is a challenge in the Labour Party. We really need to sit down and take up this matter seriously. We have to fight fire for fire. Once I got the nomination in my party I will make sure we match the political parties intimidating labour party members power for power. Unless we are able to galvanize ourselves, this kind of ugly thing will continue  to occur during elections. We know the game. If you know the game it will be very easy to match them in this kind of situation. The game is very simple".

On Edo politics, Osagie said he thought few things had changed, adding that looking at what he has seen on ground, that things has remained the same . He further said that he observed during any election that the APC and PDP usually spend millions of naira to prosecute their elections while the labour party only managed to spend the little thousands of naira at their disposal.

He however said that he has also observed that there are young people around who  want to rescue or make a difference in the polity, adding that the power that be will not let that difference happen. "As for me that is what I always want to do and that is what i'm doing right now. I want the people to know that I am not playing politics of money. I believe if I start throwing money around, I expect the public to be worried about that, because it does not tell well on the honesty of my person".

He further said that he is expecting the labour party to change the narrative. He said he has seen some little changes within the Labour party. "I believe the young people are willing to do what is right, compared to the older ones who are after monetary gains. I hope that as I continue to push, the younger people will begin to key into what will bring good governance to the people.

On whether he will be able to match other aspirants in the race, Osagie said he wants to remain a humble man. He however said that he has carefully looked at the other aspirants, but that he is yet to see any one that can match him in terms of personality, background, experience or what he will bring to the table. He said he has observed that some of them are not ready to serve but they are in the race to achieve their selfish Interests.

"What really makes me feel happy is that since I arrived and started going round I have not seen anyone coming out openly again as they have all gone into their shell, especially those in the Labour party. Because it is very rare for my kind of person with such intimidating credentials to come over from abroad and be doing what I'm doing right now. It is not because I'm the best over there. But I have come to serve my people. I'm here to give them what they do not have. When I look at it objectively I do not think anyone can surpass what I will bring to the table".
