The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare said that as a result of Subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu which resulted to the present hardship and high cost of living in the country, Edo State government has design a program that will serve as palliatives for the people of Edo State.
The Commissioner disclosed this today while briefing journalists in Benin City on the update of the palliatives for the people in the state.
"We initiated free ride bus to help our people to reduce the burden of high cost of transport. A lot of people have beneffited from this new initiative. We promised to take data to know what is costing the state government to provide this facility and the number of persons that takes the ride".
Nehikhare stated that the scheme has become more popular among the people, adding that through this program the people will be able to save some money since transportation usually take part of the earnings of the people.
He further said that the free ride bus started on the 11th of September, 2923, and the buses run all the routes in Benin City, beginning from 6: 30 am to 7 pm in the evening, adding that till date 1,494,000 persons have benefitted within the Benin Metropolis while 33,000 have beneffited from the Intercity.
"I'm sure with this a lot of our people have directly beneffited from this scheme. We are also very happy for the appreciation we have received from the people of Edo State. It was planned to know how best it will affect the lives of our people. If you check the revenue the busses would have generated for government within this period you will know that the state government is trying for our people".
On the Palliatives for the poorest among the poor which the state government promised to extend to poor households in Edo State, the commissioner said they have started collating data across the 18 local government areas in the state to capture the poorest among the poor before the payment commence, adding with this method they will be able to get to the people directly through their phone lines.
