The Oba of Benin Kingdom, Oba Ewuare II has warned Okaigheles in Benin Kingdom not to indulge in illegal sale of lands in their communities.
Oba Ewuare II gave this warning during their protest to the Oba Palace in Benin City. He told the protesting youths that the Edo State Government did ban Okaigheles from carrying out their traditional duties from their various communities. He advised them not to hid under Okaigheles to perpetuate evil by selling lands that does not belong to them.
His Royal Majesty cancel them on the role of the Okaigheles which includes helping the Odionweres like clearing of the communities and other activities whenever they are called upon to do so.
However, the Association of Okaighele in Benin Kingdom has called on the Edo State Government to immediately reverse the ban of Okaighele. The association made this call during their protest on the issue to the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Benin City.
In a press statement jointly signed by the association's Chairman, Glory Ikponmwosa and Secretary, Bright Oviasogie said Okaigheles is an age long tradition under the Benin laws and customs which is over 400 years, adding that Okaigheles are usually appointed by Odionweres/ Enigie who are subjects to the Oba of Benin Kingdom.
They said they are not politicians and they should not be treated as one. They further said that they will resist any attempt for anyone or groups to reduce their rights as a traditional citizens of Benin Kingdom.
The association however backed the Edo State Government to prosecute any Okaigheles found wanting against the law of Edo State.
