Deputy Gov. advises elderly to take Covid-19 vaccine against Pandemic


The Edo State Deputy Governor, Comr. Philip Shaibu has advised the elderly in the state to make themselves available  for the ongoing Covid-19 Vaccine injection in the state.

He gave this admonition at the event organised by the Elderly Persons Association of Nigeria (EPAN), Edo State Chapter, in Benin City. He disclosed that the health workers in charge were ready to meet them at their homes for the Covid-19 Vaccine injection.

Comr. Shaibu also said that we need the elderly to get the needed advice to grow in the society. "We need your prayers to succeed in government".

One of the speakers who talked on the topic, "A Day With the Elderly", Dr. Leo Okoduwa said it is a known fact that many of the elderly are facing different health challenges, adding that it is as a result of old age.

He advised them to try and engaged qualified personal physician who will regularly check their health status, in order to avoid self medication.

On her part, Prof. Obehi Akoria of the Clinical Services, UBTH who represented the CMD of UBTH, Prof. Darlington Obaseki disclosed that the Elder Friendly Hospitals Initiative at the UBTH was established to cater for the elderly.

The UBTH Geriatrics Team who duelled on the Topic, "Successful Aging" said that their CMD was committed in servicing the elderly and making sure they are in good health.

They advised them to always have a comprehensive check up every year.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice-chairman of the Elderly Association of Nigeria (EPAN), Edo State Chapter, Hon. Chief Eddy Ogbomo, JP, said it was a special day set aside to honour the elderly in the state. He regretted that  over the years the respect and recognition usually given to the elderly seems to have disapeared.

Hon. Ogbomo disclosed that in the 12 years of existence, that the association has been at the forefront of providing succur for the elderly, adding that the Elder Friendly Hospitals Initiative (ELDFRHI), have been providing medical advice and support for the elderly.

He called on the Edo State Government to consider the promise made to the association by commencing an elderly persons friendly policy and make it visible by building an old people's home with medication and other health support in the home.

Former Commissioner of Women Affairs, Mrs. Helen Ohenhen who used the occasion to celebrate her 50th birthday anniversary with the elderly said she became very close to them while in office.

She called on the people to always take good care of the elderly in the society as they need the support of everyone.

Mrs. Ohenhen thanked the Deputy Governor, Comr. Philip Shaibu and his wife for coming to celebrate with her on her birthday.
