By Ehichioya Steve Odion

Frontline Governorship aspirant for the Edo Governorship election, on the platform of the Labour Party, LP, Mr. Bassey Ogbemudia Osagie has promised to partner with some organizations in Canada in order to give support to the Internally Displaced Persons  (IDPs) in Benin City.

He made this known to journalists shortly after donating some relief materials to the (IDPs) camp at Uhogua, Ovia North East Local government, Edo State.

Osagie said that what motivated his visit to the camp was to know the kind of life they are living and to know how best he can support them in a sustainable way. He however said, he was very depressed when he saw some things at the camp, since he has never been exposed to those level of life.

According to Osagie, "I'm aware they have many IDPs camps in Nigeria, but I never knew they had one in Edo State, until a friend of mine drew my attention to it. They show me some photographs from the camp. I have never been to any IDP camp before.  I then decided to go and see them to know  how they live. I immediately called the coordinator, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho and arranged to visit them.

"When I got there and as soon as they knew that i came from Canada, the coordinator quickly called one of their Board of Directors member in Canada, Mr. Charles Igbinosun, who happened to be my friend. The man called me to brief me about the camp. After gathering all the necessary information from the camp I decided to send my team to the market to get some items which we gave to them as  relief materials".

The Governorship aspirant described the visit as very fascinating, because he had never seen that kind of environment before that day. "I saw the children running and playing around. It was very exciting. They looked good, but the environment is very sad. For me, it is sad and upsetting. However, I have now seen them in real life".

Osagie said if elected as  governor of Edo State,  his government will give huge support to such IDP camps so that the children can have a better life. "As a government we should be able to facilitate  and make some agencies to support them.

He also said that in Canada they are keen in supporting this kind of projects, adding that, he will explore the opportunity to ensure they get all the necessary benefits.

The IDP camp accommodates and caters for thousands of indigent people, which include, Orphans, Widows, Widowers and victims of Boko Haram insurgency and Banditry in the Northern part of the country.
