Edo State Government has commence the payment of salaries of the traditional rulers in the state, after a successful resolution of the pending issues in a meeting held between Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe and the Enigies in the Edo South Senatorial District.
This was disclosed today in Benin City by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare while briefing journalists
He further said that the reason their money was Withheld in April was as a result of the agreement reach by the parties involve in the unresolved issues , adding that having successfully resolved their pending issues which was made known to the state government, the money was eventually released for payment.
Nehikhare said there is no time the state government withhold the money met for the traditional rulers as been paddled by mischief persons in the state, adding that traditional council are answerable to the Oba of Benni which he said has not changed.
"As a government we are happy with what the traditional rulers are doing in their various domains. We are going to give them more responsibility in their various communities. They are the one to identify strangers if there are any in their communities. Government we ensure the security and welfare of the people. Oba of Benin is our father and the Enigies are his subjects".
He added that before now the 5% for the local government allocation was only coming from FAAC that comes from the federal government monthly, until Governor Obaseki decided to include Value Added Tax and Excess Crude Oil account which eventually raised the traditional rulers monthly allocation.
"Between July 2022 and July 2023 Edo government has released 1.3 billion naira as allocation to the Edo State Traditional Rulers. Edo South N255.7m, Edo Central N299.8 and Edo North N377.6 m while the Benin Traditional Council got N319m
