EDO 2024: Esan Traditional Rulers' Visit To Oba Ewuare II Is A Mark Of Honour, Strategic

By Ehichioya Steve Odion

The recent visit by the Esan Traditional Rulers, Esan Okpa Initiative and other Esan stakeholders to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II was an honour, strategic and historic.

They were at the Palace  to formally consult with His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II and solicit his support for Edo Central to produce the next governor of Edo State come 2024.

While Oba Ewuare was diplomatic, strategic  and beneficial to Esan course, that of the Edo North Traditional Rulers seemed confrontational revealing irreconciliable differences, as their response to the Edo Central Traditional Rulers request was that their son, Comrade Philip Shaibu will contest the Edo 2024 governorship election despite knowing full well that Edo North have had their two tenures of 8 years.

Such action does not represent the coexistence, equity and justice the  Edo society is clamouring for in order to continue to live peacefully as brothers and sisters.

Oba Ewuare II in his wisdom welcomed them and encouraged them to continue with their consultations on the issue while he too promised to consult with his subjects.

There is no doubt His Royal Majesty believed he is a father to all in Edo state and as such anything that will bring peace and stability to Edo State will be his priority.

This move by Oba Ewuare II must be commended while we encourage other stakeholders in the state to continue to preach peace and unity. Because, power sharing in the state is one of the things that can easily bring peace and harmony to Edo State.

Edo State is made of three Senatorial Districts. Edo South would have spent 16 years after the tenure of Governor Goodwin Obaseki while Edo North already has spent 8 years through Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. Edo Central only spent 18 months as governor through Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor. So, for fairness, equity and justice, Edo Central should be given the opportunity to produce the governor in 2024.

Although, based on the information available to us so far, there are cooperation with all the stakeholders consulted across the two other Senatorial Districts by the Edo Central team. We also believe too that they will  have reasons to cooperate and endorse  the plea of Esan people on the issue and allowed them to present a Governorship candidate that will sincerely work in the interest of Edo people.

Above all, in order to achieve this task ahead, all the major political parties in the state should ensure that their Governorship candidates come from Edo Central Senatorial District.
