Edo Bakers call on FG to intervene over high cost of baking materials

The Chairman of Edo State Bakers and Caterers Association of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter, Benjamin Agbonze re-emharsized the need for the Federal Government to quickly intervene in the rising cost of baking materials in the country.

He made the appeal during their monthly meeting held  yesterday in Benin City. He said except the Federal Government act quickly, the industry will witness crisis which may lead to total shut down of production that may equally lead to food crisis. He described bread as a staple food that is met for all category people.

He said the recent planned strike by the association was averted due to the intervention by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Trade and Investment as the strike action would have brought hardship to the people. He  added that the association being human decided to shelve it.

He also disclosed that the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emiefele recently added wheats to restricted items that will be imported into the country. He said the association was yet to know the rational behind the statement.

He said the large loaf of bread is now sold between N600 to N700 as flour that was sold for N15,000 before is now sold for N23, 000. He said some bakeries have started closing for business in Edo State which he said will lead to food crisis and loss of jobs.
"We are calling on the FG to come to the aid of Bakers. A hungry man is an angry man. Bread is a staple food for all category of persons. But the government is playing with the situation".

  1. Pls federal government should intervene and save the bakery industry from imminent crises. They are self employed and should be encouraged to sustain the sector.
