The immediate past State Chairman of National Union of Civil Engineering Construction Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW), Edo State Council, Comrade Emmanuel Yama has called on the Federal Government to take the present insecurity in the country seriously and addressed the situation quickly for the safety of Nigerians, especially workers.
This call was made yesterday during the Union's 6th Edo State Council Quadrennial Delegates Conference with the Theme: "Sustainable Infrastructural Development: Panacea to Insecurity and Unemployment in Nigeria" in Benin City.
He further called on the the government and security agents to endeavour to curtail the excesses of kidnappers in order to make sites and roads safe for its members who are frequently been kidnapped.
He said as a union the protection of members is utmost, and strongly canvassed for it to continue without compromise, especially in the present ailing economy, job insecurity and unemployment which is on the increase as construction industry suffers the most when the government careless.
On his part, the National President of the Union, Comrade Stephen Okoro, represented by Comrade Akinwando Atose said the theme of this year's 6th National State Delegates conference was appropriate and timely, based on the promise that Nigeria is sufficiently endowed with enormous and abundant natural human resources adequately enough to place her amongst the first ten developed countries of the world, adding that unfortunately higher percent of the population wallows in abject poverty with the poorest living standard globally.
He berated the government for the unemployment, Insecurity and underdevelopment growing faster as the nation is caught between affluence and deplorable affliction.
The Minister of Labour,Chris Ngige represented by Mrs. Florence Owie said she appreciated the Union in Edo State for helping to avoid labour crisis. She asked the leaders to always take workers welfare as priority in order to reduced agitations from them.
She further said that the workers are Paramount in any decision taken in labour matters. "Without employers, workers and Union leaders there is no development in the society".
Shortly after taken the oath of office the newly elected Chairman of the Union, Comrade Changes Obuhoro said he was humbled by the mandate given to him by his colleagues in the State Working Committee to lead the Council.
He said he was quite aware of the enormous task ahead and promised to perform his duty diligently by leading with good example. He also promsed to work harmonously with the Construction Union and the Nigeria Labour Congress.
He thanked all the delegates, outgoing State Working Committee members and the state executive members for electing him and finding him worthy to pilot the affairs of the state council in the next four years.
Highlight of the event was the swearing-in of newly elected executive by Akinwando Atose who represented the National preident of the Union.
