Have passion for your profession, John Aikpokpo-Martins tells Lawyers

Nigerian lawyers have been advised to have a burning passion for their profession in order to go excel in their job.
This admonition was given by the lead speaker John Aikpokpo-Martins Esq., first Vice National President Nigerian Bar Association at the Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch 2021 Annual Law Week taking place in Benin City.
Speaking on the topic: "The road map to building a successful legal practice in Nigeria in the face of hash economic climate", said as a lawyer if you do not like what you do it becomes a problem for you, and that you might run away from that aspect of life.
He said from the beginning as a lawyer it is always very stressful, adding that except you are from a wealthy family where you get support from the beginning. "But what keeps you is the passion. You loved being a lawyer. You loved going to court. You will like to fight injustice and solving people's problems. For those who have that spirit, that keeps you".
He further said that for those who do not have passion for it feel discouraged and leave the profession. He also said that those you assisted as a lawyer without charging fee may eventually connect you to a bigger business that would earn you good money. He therefore advice lawyers to pursue their job diligently and assured them of getting good result.
Also speaking on the topic, Dr. Samson Erhaze, Chief State Counsel, Ministry of Justice, said considering the present trend that lawyers need not to rely on their own library alone but graduate to electronic library for more information that could assist them in their job.
"We expect lawyers to be computer literate and be abreast with internet compliance. Subscribed to online law report which is easily accessable. You can get so many information to prepare your address for court cases. This can help you to resolve any issue in your hand and the business of the profession will be striving".
Another speaker, Notory Public, Nosa Edo Osagie Esq. and chairman in one of the section described all the issues discussed so far as exposive. He said the issue of how to better the lots of the young lawyers was extensively discussed. He advice them to be hard working as that is the only way to achieve success.
"The young lawyers have to be patience as pesiverance in life pays. There is no short cut to success, you have to go through pains. The young lawyers have been more enriched in the event by way of advice and information.
Another speaker at the event, Barr. Emmanuel Usifo who also duel on the topic said we must realise that this economic situation confronting the globe and as a result people are been made poorer every day in the challenges.
He also said it will take innovation, diversification and learning new trends, especially in our various profession to be able to eat and spend for others.
He said that is why the NBA, Benin branch wants to teach the young lawyers how to fish rather than giving them money.
The Vice Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch, Mrs.Paula Agbale described the annual law week programme as captivating and interesting looking at the speakers with their various topics presented.
She said the theme of this year's programme is about insecurity, one of the challenges the country is presently facing.

The Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS) is an agency established by the government to give the Edo people the chance to reorganized land administration.
This was disclosed by the Managing Director of the agency, Arch. Francis Evboumwan in an interview with the Groovewatch Magazine at the on going Nigeria Bar Association 2021 Annual Law Week. He said they were strenghtening the land administration process to enable the people have title for their lands to enable them use it to raise capital for their businesses, adding that it will also make Edo State conducive environment to do business.
Arch. Evboumwan said the people's response in aquiring the C of O has been encouraging as they have been coming in large numbers. He said they assist those in their data base to defend their property against encroachment .
Earlier in the discussion section as the lead speaker Arch. Francis Evboumwan gave some insight about their services to the people in the land matters.
He said some communities have started benefiting from their services in the area of demadcating of their lands for a proper allocation to land owners. He said because of this registration they will be able to know the land that is free for acquisition.
He disclosed that the Land Use Charge is done in conjuction with the local government, adding that the tenantment fee charged by their agency are paid to the local government where the building is located.
He also said survey plan must come from a registered surveyor before considering any application. He said they have been able to carried out the survey of Benin City.
One of the participant in the law week programme, who is also a member of the Nigeria Bar Association, Edo State Branch, Barr. Ehimare Imadojemu said the reason the association choosed this year's topic on security was to enable them make their input and equally made their recommendation to the government for implementation.
Continuing, Barr. Imadojemu said insecurity is dividing the country through Boko Haram, Bandits, kidnapping and alleged fulani killer herdsmen, adding that NBA, Benin Branch thought it wise to address the issues as it concerns the survival of the common man. "The common man is that person on the street who ordinarily does not know the implication on how the insecurity affects him. As for me I take insecurity very serious and that is the reason I joined the local vigilante to guide in the community where I lived. Because as a lawyer I want to see them doing their work without molesting any body by going against people's human right. If it comes to the aspect of law I will give them a guide line on how to operate."
Barr. Imadojemu said if everyone keep looking at the situation without taking a step that we will remain where we are, adding that if as a community members you cannot recognize strangers who will recognized them. He also said the security in Edo State does not exclusively lied in the hand of the governor alone, but everyone in the State should take security seriously.
Another participant and also a member of NBA, Benin brance, Barr. Edwin Atohengbe said the topic choose by the association is timely, especially when you view what is presently happening in every comunity.
He said most of the challenges we are facing today is between farmers and herders and communal crisis. He praised the speakers for doing justice to the various topics discussed so far.
