A front line aspirant for the Edo State 2024 Governorship election, on the platform of the Labour Party, Mr. Ogbemudia Bassey Osagie who hails from Uhi in Ohunmwode Local Area of Edo State said although he has not been into full politics, but he has given support to prominent politicians like the present governor of Edo State, Gov. Godwin Obaseki and former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi in driving their political activities.
He said the reason he is in the Governorship race is what he described as the present bad situation of the economy in the country which he said is badly affecting the people of Edo State.
"In Edo State we are blessed with so much resources. But I discovered that there is no progress and no improvement in all areas of the economy. It is like we are going backwards".
"I have served the people of Toronto, in Canada as a police officer for 24 years. I have been in their Security Management for 10 years. I felt it is time for me to come home. It is time for me to leave my comfort zone to come here to protect and secure my people. No state or country can develop without a quality security system and effective security agencies. Such a country can never develop, because people will be afraid to invest in such a place".
Osagie further said that he discovered that since 1999 those who served as governor in the State have not faired well in intense of administration and welfare of the people, adding that none of them have the qualities he possessed in the public service, transparency and accountability, especially his exposure in the western world as a police officer.
Osagie who already has a security company in Nigeria, established 5 years ago with branches in Abuja, Lagos and Benin City has security guards numbering 360 officers.
According to him, "I am not coming into the Governorship race to copy and paste. I am coming with 24 years depth in Government of Canada. I am bringing to Edo State all the ethical values and transparency from Canada. It is different from someone who travelled to go and study the system. I have been part of the system. It is that good system I am bringing, with all that will enhance Edo State; good access roads, education and good economy, all that is what I'm coming to fix so as it is in Canada, we can replicate it here at home".
The Governorship hopeful said you must look at the skills which grows an economy which he noted is not available in the state. He added that lack of factories is the reason the youths don't have jobs. He said in Canada every higher institutions has an apprentice program attached to it. He also said that unless you go to a high school you cannot function as a carpenter and other skilled jobs. "By doing this you now know how to secure your business".
Osagie said those who want to cue into his Governorship project to do well to find out about him, adding that his life have been in the public domain as a public officer for 24 years. He said people can look at that and make a decision if he is the best person they want as Governor.
He said if the people of Toronto can trust him with so much power and authority while in that country, there is no reason Edo people cannot trust him, as he will make sure people have faith in his government and in him.
Bassey Ogbemudia Osagie will formally make his Gubernatorial intention known to the public at the Labour Party Secretariat on Friday 18th of August, 2023 at 2 pm.
